Historic fish samples from the Southeast USA lack microplastics

چکیده
Most of earth's systems and the organisms that inhabit them are known to contain microplastics, which well documented have lethal sublethal effects on living things. Due their generally short timeframe recent focus, contemporary studies microplastics in fish unable inform past patterns microplastic ingestion, as such there is a knowledge gap regarding when began showing up fishes. We examined n = 185 historical (museum) samples representing seven species from five freshwater across 51 years order look for over time. found only three particles, two were more collection (1996 2006). Although our results not conclusive toward understanding true nature occurrence time fishes, findings present strong evidence southeast U.S. stream likely did ingest large numbers during 20th century.

Differential saturation of Pacific Northwest and Southeast (USA) fish assemblages
Plots of local versus regional richness have been used to test whether assemblages are ‘saturated’ with species. However, the validity of these tests is limited by scale-dependence and arbitrarily defined sampling units, statistical autocorrelation between local and regional richness data, and the confounding effects of propagule pressure. In this study, local versus regional richness plots wer...
متن کاملHistoric barley seed samples and their utility
Gene banks around the world hold over 370.000 accessions of barley (van Hintum and Menting, 2003). Although a large number of landraces and obsolete cultivars are stored in genebanks the geographic coverage of this conserved material is far from evenly distributed. For example only a handful of landraces from Northern Europe have been conserved (Jones et al, 2008a). Thus studies of geographic d...
متن کاملAnthropocene streams and base-level controls from historic dams in the unglaciated mid-Atlantic region, USA.
Recently, widespread valley-bottom damming for water power was identified as a primary control on valley sedimentation in the mid-Atlantic US during the late seventeenth to early twentieth century. The timing of damming coincided with that of accelerated upland erosion during post-European settlement land-use change. In this paper, we examine the impact of local drops in base level on incision ...
متن کاملDetection Trend of Helminth Eggs in the Strata Soil Samples from Ancient Historic Places of Korea
For several years, we have conducted a series of studies on the patterns of ancient parasitism prevailing in the soil of rural and urban areas of past Kingdom of Korea. Actually, during our survey of paleoparasitology in archaeological sites of Korean peninsula, numerous ancient parasite eggs were discovered in the samples from the city districts of Hansung (Joseon) and Buyeo (Baikje), the pala...
